Abstract

Bookplates are sometimes hard to identify. In some cases, the coat of arms is present but no name of the owner is given. In other instances, a bookplate is pasted over another, hiding the identity of a former owner. In extreme cases, bookplates are steamed off, especially if the name attached is someone distinguished and therefore collectible. And then there is simple wanton damage like this ripped bookplate, where part of an urn and the word ‘Kent’ remain as identifiers. Fortunately, a search on various bookplate websites revealed that this is the bookplate of William Boteler (1745 –1818), a surgeon and agriculturist who was born in Eastry, Kent. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. This work on the Turks was once part of his library.
