Abstract
The art and science of heraldry is at the base of armorial bookplates, those bookplates that feature coats of arms. This heraldic album was either compiled by Helen A. Hughes, who gave it to David Farmer, or by R. J. Wood, who, from the inscription within, lived at the College, Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex, England. Whoever it was, they have neatly arranged in a colourful array, various heraldic shields, coats of arms, intertwined initials, mottoes, and crests. On display is the Wood coat of arms, and the crests of various aristocrats such as Lord Brougham, Duke of Northumberland, and Lord Fairfax. This album was given to Special Collections by the late James McCready, a Dunedin-based heraldry expert.
