Abstract

On 11 May 1956, after the fulsome acclaim of his work on Evelyn, the Delegates of the Clarendon Press appointed de Beer as the editor of John Locke’s Correspondence. In his lifetime, John Locke (1632-1704), English philosopher and physician, wrote some 3,600 letters, all of which de Beer gathered together, transcribed, and edited. The last volume (of eight) of the Correspondence appeared in 1989. Ever the scholarly collector, de Beer amassed a collection of some 552 titles on or about John Locke, many of them first editions. These he gifted to the University Library in 1982. This first edition English language translation of Toleration was by William Popple, a Unitarian merchant. It appeared anonymously, like the first Latin edition of 1689.
