Abstract

Alexander Reid, or Rhead, or Read (1586-1641) was an anatomist and surgeon, who graduated from Aberdeen University about 1600, studied surgery in France and practiced in London. In 1632, he was appointed lecturer on anatomy at Barber-Surgeons’ Hall. His work gives an insight into the state of medical knowledge in the generation immediately before Harvey’s discovery of the circulation of the blood. Indeed, Reid was too old to accept Harvey’s discoveries that the blood circulates. His lectures form the basis of this book.
