Thomas Bell (1792-1880) was Lecturer in Dentistry at Guy’s and St. Thomas’s Hospitals and at the time the only capable surgeon who applied scientific surgery to diseases of the teeth. Bell combined this with a second career, becoming Professor of Zoology at King’s College London in 1836. As part of his role, he was heavily involved with the reception and analysis of Charles Darwin’s material brought back from the Beagle expedition of 1831-36.
