Probably of John Wesley’s mother, Mrs Susanna Wesley; margin below image in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: This historical picture was painted in 1863 by James Smetham, Esq. R.A. of London, a well known artist & a friend of Ruskin & Rosetti. It represents a group of Maori chiefs & their wives, the inetrpreter, the Rev. Dr & Mrs Jobson, & Mrs Brames Hall assembled in a room in Wesley’s house, London, & was intended to commemorate the Wesleyan Missionary Jubilee. The Maoris, in charge of the interpreter, visited England to gain an idea of its greatness & resource; the expedition was undertaken with the sanction of the New Zealand Government. The received the most hospitable reception from the Queen & from the highest persons in the Kingdom. The Queen was godmother of a Maori boy born during the visit- November 1863- The picture indicates the meeting of the civilised Maori with the Missionary, to whose labours his advancement is due. It was intended that it should hang in the Mission Hall & Mr Swales, a publisher in Darlington, undertook to publish a jubilee print from it. But the scheme fell through. [Text obscured] … The picture, for which Mr Smetham received one hundred & fifty guineas was sent to New Zealand for sale, the price asked being 200 guineas. After a curious history it finally came into my possession. The portraits, Mrs Smetham informs me, are all careful likenesses. T.M. Hocken, Dunedin 1889.

Church buildings
Margin below image on stone: This church, which is 80 feet long, 36 feet broad and 40 feet high, has been erected by the voluntary labour of the Maories, under the superintendence of Archdeacon Hadfield and the Rev. H. Williams. The timber for the building was carefully selected from the forest and brought a distance of several miles. The ridge pole, which is made of one solid totara pole 86 feet long, was brought a distance of 12 miles. The building was commenced in the year 1849 and opened in the year 1851, and is a noble specimen of native workmanship; l.l. in ink: T.M. Hocken; label in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: The three totara posts were brought down with immense labour from the forest heights of Otaki, Waikanae and Ohau and were thus with the rafter patterns, carving and raupo thatching a conjoint gift by the tribes of these districts. The old chief Te Rauparaha is leaning against the nearest post. An incorrigible savage to the end he yet had a regard for the new whakapono or faith, and so lent his countenance. He died at Otaki Nov 27 1849, and was buried by the Rev. W. Ronaldson. Archedeacon Hadfield and Rev. Sam.l Williams were in charge of the district. T.M.H.; label: Na Te Hakena Tenei Tiki.

Lang, John Dunmore, 1799-1878
On mount in ink: T.M. Hocken; label in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: Born at Greenock Aug 25 1799, educated at Glasgow University, died at Sydney Aug.t 8 1878. He arrived at Sydney in 1823 introducing the Presbyterian church & school system & in 1832 establishing the Australian College. A great Colonist of fine public spirit he was undoubtedly a member of the church militant- always in political or other hot water. To set forth his special views, he started in 1835 a weekly journal, the Colonist & advocated the Wakefield systm of colonization, continuous & extensive emigration & latterly separation from the home country. He was a prolific writer. In 1839 he published his Four Letters to Lord Durham in which, narrowly avoiding libel, he severely castigates the New Zealand Mission. It is an interesting historical pamphlet. T.M.H.; label: Na Te Hakena Tenei Tiki.

Temperance--New Zealand
As sketched by our own artist at ten oclock pm Monday 30th June 1884. Lister Hutton & Co Litho.
Through image on stone: They’re a coming. Hang Compromise, Pull ’em over. Warm work, but I suppose it’s all right. Fish Says so. Gentlemen, I assure you I have no personal feeling, but I like to win. Now then all together, One more, Pull for Tea and Temperance. They shall be virtuous. It may be injustice, but we will teach them to tread on our corns. An elder of the church trying to ruin me and my big family. Ten oclock, other side please. Think of the suffering masses on our right hand and on our left. A very pretty quarrel, but it’s no use interfering. No they call it a step in the right direction. Let them take it by themselves.
